Awards process
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service runs in annual cycles, starting with nominations in September each year, local and national assessments between January and June, and the announcement of Awardees in November. Learn more about the timeline and meet some of the assessors below:

1 September 2024 | New nomination period opens for 2025 awards. |
1 December 2024 | Nomination period closes. |
December 2024 | Eligibility of submitted nominations is checked. |
January 2025 – April 2025 | Local Lieutenancies conduct due diligence and visit eligible groups. |
April 2025 – June 2025 | National Assessors consider recommended groups and decide on a shortlist. |
July 2025 | Royal approval of shortlisted groups. |
14 November 2025 | Awards officially announced on His Majesty’s The King’s Birthday, in The Gazette, GOV.UK and on the KAVS website. |
November 2025 – March 2026 | Lord-Lieutenants present Awards to the successful groups. |
May 2026 | Two representatives from the awarded groups attend a Royal Garden Party. |
Meet the National Assessment Committee
The KAVS National Assessors have a key role in the awards process as they make the final decision on which groups should be recommended to His Majesty The King to receive an award.

Nick Capaldi OBE
Nick has held a number of non-executive roles including as a Governor of Cardiff Metropolitan University and as a member of the UK Government’s Advisory Panel for UK City of Culture 2025. He is currently on the national Committee of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service and a Board trustee of the English Symphony Orchestra. He is also a Magistrate sitting in the Family Court.
Nick holds an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from City University London and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022.

In addition Helen is a coach and mentor to individuals in the third sector to support their personal growth and development. She holds an honours degree from Warwick University and executive diplomas from INSEAD and the Institute for Applied Behavioural Science (USA).

Maggy Pigott CBE
Since retiring she has also served six years on the Public Service Honours Committee, had a book published and become a grandmother. Maggy is a Bencher of Middle Temple and in 2011 was awarded a CBE for her contribution to the administration of justice and flexible working.

He maintains his volunteering locally and alongside KAVS, he is a member of his District scout volunteer team.
